Belmont Shore Residents Association

 MINUTES

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

January 8, 2009

The meeting was called to order by President Mike Ruehle at 6:00 pm. The members of the Executive Board present were: Tim Clark, Aileen Colon, Vice President Terence Endersen, John Forstrom, Marvin Jones, Larry Jordan, Secretary Jeff Miller, President Mike Ruehle, and Treasurer Christopher Van Horn. Executive Board members Charles Folks and Jim Lazarus were absent. Thirty-five additional BSRA members and visitors were present.

Librarian Natalie Beam of the Bay Shore Library spoke about several of the resources available at the library.

Treasurer Christopher Van Horn reported the checking account balance is $4,526.60.

LBPD East Division Commander Cynthia Renaud reported on recent police activity in the area. She announced the next Coffee with the Commander meeting and explained her campaign for replacement of the aging and inadequate East Division Police Station. She responded to these questions concerning enforcement activity: She had no information about citations for smoking on the beach, explaining that these data are not easily available from the database. She will request additional enforcement for stop sign violations.

Nancy Buchanan, BSBA representative, reported the success of the recent blood drive, and announced the Chocolate Festival, scheduled for February 7.

Jeanette Gavin, the designated residents' representative on the Belmont Shore Parking Commission, gave no report because there was no meeting last month.

Julie Maleki of Councilmember DeLong's office reported that the hearing for the entertainment permit requested by Panama Joe's is planned for a City Council meeting in April. She announced the on line permit system for the pilot parking program in the beach lots is now available. President Ruehle noted several problems encountered in using the system. Finally, Ms. Maleki announced the next Third District meeting is scheduled for 11:45 on January 15 at La Strada Restaurant.

Richard Cameron, Director of Environmental Planning for the Port of Long Beach, spoke about efforts to mitigate air and water pollution problems at the port.

President Ruehle announced the BSRA "shop local" campaign for January will be discounted prices offered to Shore residents at Super Mex Restaurant after 4 pm on January 20.

President Ruehle announced a public meeting to be held by the City of Long Beach Planning Department at Fremont Elementary School at 7 pm on January 14 to discuss the city's "2030 Plan" and the zoning concept of "placetypes".

President Ruehle announced the results of the recent BSRA survey regarding the development plans for the Seaport Marina Hotel site: the majority of respondents want the development to conform to the existing 35 foot height limit, rather than allowing the six and twelve story buildings sought by the developer.

President Ruehle reported the results of the survey about permit parking: residents had mixed opinions about the desirability of permits. Those living closest to Second Street were more inclined to favor resident-only permits. Mr. Ruehle emphasized that the BSRA is not advocating for or against permits, but is surveying the residents to be able to report their opinions to the city.

President Ruehle proposed making a donation to the Bay Shore Library in appreciation of the use of the meeting room by BSRA. A motion to donate $300 to the library was approved unanimously.

Executive Board member Christopher Van Horn led a discussion about publication and distribution of a BSRA newsletter to all Shore residents. Cost estimates as high as $3,000 were considered. After discussion of the issue, a motion to approve a newsletter not to cost more than $1,500 was approved by a vote of 5 in favor and 3 against.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 pm.
